This creates a song that’s virtually impossible to rap along to, where the listener can do nothing but marvel at the sheer talent. Kendrick also doesn’t use the beat provided, instead creating his own beat and completely disregarding the natural flow of the music. Kendrick has two 12 bar versus, but uses segments of the chorus five times. Generally, rappers will have a 12 or 16 bar verse followed by a chorus. In my opinion, Rigamortus solidifies Lamar as one of the best lyricists of all time. In Rigamortus, Kendrick proves that his rap skills are top notch. If you want a song to hype up or improve your mood, this one might do the trick.

Lamar seems free in the song – sitting in first class talking to the stewardess about his success. The up-beat music is great driving music. And while the hook bemoans his lack of ignorance, he includes an ironic twist by educating listeners throughout the song.Īnother underrated Lamar song, Hol’ Up’s production is the reason this song is so good. Instead, he knows too well the problems that he and others in his community face. However, the central message that ignorance is best shows that Kendrick is the opposite of ignorant.

Instead it’s full of realism, optimism, and confidence backed up by the young rappers determination. Even with such dark context, this song is by no means depressing. Even with the feel-good music, Lamar quickly delves into standing on street corners and loading up guns.

The only song on this list from Lamar’s first studio album, Ignorance is Bliss uses a Disney-esque movie background music followed by a hard beat. The word “poe” is a play on southern slang of “poor”, but also related to the poet Edgar Allen Poe who is suspected of dying from alcohol poisoning. The song reflects on Lamar’s childhood, and how he assumed he would eventually end up in a jail cell. Throughout that album, Joey Bada$$ uses the 90s style boom bap beat, which Kendrick incorporates in this song. Go Stetsa I by Stetsasonic, which Joey Bada$$ also sampled in FromdaTomb$ on his debut album 1999. The background beat is relaxed as Kendrick fluidly raps his bars. Even so, it’s easily one of my favorite songs by Kendrick and I debated whether I should put it even higher. This 2011 song is not one of Lamar’s hits.

The last line of the song is “The evils of Lucy all around me/ so I went running for answers.” Lucy is a nickname Kendrick uses throughout this album for Lucifer – or Satan. The beat stops and Kendrick steps to the mic, warning of resentment and depression that comes naturally with abuse of power and influence. The dance-inducing funky beat and high pitched trumpets add to Lamar’s message of optimism.Įven though Kendrick spends the song saying everyone will “be alright”, his tune changes near the close. Like the rest of this album, Alright is heavily influenced by funk music. Lamar describes how he and his friends break into a house “in search of any nintendo, DVD’s, plasma screen TV’s.” At one point, his mom calls to ask what he’s doing, before he quickly ends the call as his friends try to evade the cops.Īlright became one of the most popular songs from To Pimp a Butterfly. Driving through the city, Kendrick describes how peer pressure forced him to do things he wouldn’t otherwise. After that, the beat changes and Lamar begins the purest storytelling of his career. The first minute and a half is filled with advice from Kendrick’s mother – in which she tells him the streets will “burn” him out. Instead, the mood changes to a menacing G-Funk to show the sudden seriousness of the situation. Sandwiched between Backseat Freestyle and Money Trees, The Art of Peer Pressure could be easy to overlook. 10 is The Art of Peer Pressure, from Kendrick’s 2012 album good kid, m.A.A.d city. The Art of Peer Pressure – good kid, m.A.A.d city.Narrowing it down to 10 was the hardest part of this whole process. My original list included 25 Lamar songs. This list includes plenty of songs which didn’t go down as classics, showing just how deep his discography is. The Compton, California native has so many hits. When I decided to write a top 10 songs for rap artists, I wanted to begin with the most difficult artist I could think of – Kendrick Lamar.
